Abstract
604,752. Compound sheet materials. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 13 1944. Nos. 19851 and 19852. Convention dates. June 23, 1943, and Sept. 13. 1943. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXIII] Panels, wall structures, &c. particularly of irregular curvature as for parts of wings, fuselage, rudder &c. of aircraft, comprise metal strips .20 bent to a wavy form with their apices secured together to produce a honeycomb structure and a pair of bracing sheets of thermo-setting plastic extending across and bonded to the opposite faces of the honeycomb. Fibrous or other fillers and canvas or other textile reinforcement, may be included and a smooth covering also of plastic may be applied to both faces. Or plastic material may be contained within the cells and a bracing sheet bonded to it. To secure fittings to a wall structure sheet metal stampings may be spot welded between two of the strips forming the mesh or bent over to embrace the sides of an opening and have an apertured dished portion receiving the head' of a bolt. The edges of two walls may be sealed by a plastic edge member. The material may form frame, bracing, beam, rib and web members. In a modification a grille formed of undulated strips is placed on a template over. a stretched fabric impregnated with a thermo-setting resin which is caused to extrude beneath the grille walls, a second fabric sheet being held under tension over the grille and the assembly subjected to low pressure and heat. A plastic finishing coat preferably comprises a resin-impregnated wood pulp and is cured by subjecting the panel to a pressure of 2-10 lbs. per square inch at temperatures of 300- 350‹F. Specification 515,267, [Group XXXIII], is referred to.
