Abstract
604,669. Dressing grinding wheels. SOC. GENEVOISE D'INSTRUMENTS DE PHYSIQUE. Jan. 15, 1945, No. 1205. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1944. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding threads, taps, milling cutters and the like, the rotating work 6<SP>1</SP> is carried by a table 5 traversed, by lead screw 7, on ways 3, 3a on machine bed 1 having a transverse way 2 on which a carriage 4 is fed by handwheel 30, screw 32 and nut 33. The carriage 4 has fixed thereto a sleeve 25 in which is rotatably mounted a sleeve 22 having secured thereto an arm 17 which carries a diamond 11 for dressing the grinding wheel 8 which is carried by a sleeve 34 rotatable and slidable axially in the sleeve 22; the sleeve 34 also carries a motor 38 driving the grinding wheel through belt and pulley. To feed the grinding wheel to the diamond, the sleeve 34 is urged to the left by a spring 69 interposed between end cap 71 and member 70, bearing on a pin 66 secured to the sleeve 22; a shaft 60 is mounted in a member 64, also bearing on the pin 66, the shaft 60 having a screwed end 59 engaging a nut 62 in end plate 37 of the sleeve 34. The shaft 60 is rotated by hand wheel 51 through gearing 53, shaft 54 having universal joints 56, 57 and gearing 55, 58. The diamond 11 is carried by an arm 12 oscillatory on trunnion pin 13 carried by spindle 15 adjustable about a vertical axis, in bearing 16 carried by the arm 17. The diamond can thus be turned through the angle between the two flanks of the grinding wheel profile; to effect dressing, the arm 12 is oscillated about the trunnion pin 13. The arm 12 can be swung right up and secured by a latch so that the diamond does not prevent the grinding wheel from contacting the work. Rotary adjustment of the sleeve 22 and of the arm 17 carried thereby is effected by a worm 26 carried by the arm 17 and engaging a rack 261 secured to the fixed sleeve 25, the worm being operated by a hand wheel. Rotary adjustment of the sleeve 34 relative to the sleeve 22 and the arm 17 carried thereby is effected by a toothed sector 39, secured to end plate 35 of the sleeve 34, meshing with an annularly grooved member 40 carried by the arm 17, the member 40 which is freely rotatable being movable axially by means of a hand wheel operating through a screw and nut. The grinding wheel is tilted, by means of the member 40, to the pitch angle of the work; in the case of threads or taps the spindle 15 is maintained vertical, but in the cases where the characteristic profile is at right angles to the helix, as e.g. milling cutters for gears, the spindle 15 is adjusted, by the worm 26, to the same inclination as the grinding wheel.
