Abstract
604,572. Fire-preventing shutters. MATHER & PLATT, Ltd., and McCLENAN, F. Nov. 27, 1945, No. 32054. [Class 47 (ii)] In a spring - counter balanced rolling shutter adapted to close automatically when a link fuses in case of fire, the spring is first rendered inoperative when the link fuses so that the shutter begins to fall under its own weight, and its action is then reinstated so as to be operative during the remainder of the fall of the shutter, and subsequently if it is desired to raise the shutter. The shaft 3 is rotatable in bearings 5, 7 and is interconnected by the balancing spring 10 with the barrel 1 which rotates on the shaft on bearings 4. A ratchet wheel 8 secured to the shaft is normally locked by a catch lever 15 connected to the fusible link 20<SP>1</SP>. The wheel 8 carries a pawl 20 which is urged by a spring 21 to engage a ratchet wheel 19 secured to the barrel but normally is held away from it by a pivoted catch 22. When the link 20<SP>1</SP> melts, the lever 15 falls and the shaft 3 is rotated by a spring 27. This rotation forces the pawl 20 from the catch 22 and the pawl engages the wheel 19 so that the barrel and shaft rotate together and the shutter 2 begins to descend without hindrance from the spring 10. After a small angular rotation of the wheel 8, the pawl 20 is disengaged from the wheel 19 by means of a stop 23<SP>1</SP> and the wheel 8 is locked 'against further movement by the pawl 20 wedging between stops 23<SP>1</SP> and 25. The barrel can now rotate alone and the shutter continues to descend under its acquired momentum and against the action of the spring 10. If it is desired to raise the shutter, the spring 10 will exercise its normal counterbalancing function. If the link 201 should melt while the shutter is lowered, the wheel 8 is prevented from rotating by a pawl 31 fitted with a feeler arm 33 which holds the pawl away from the wheel, by engaging with the shutter 2 when the latter is rolled on the barrel. To reset the mechanism after an automatic release, the shutter is rolled up and the ratchet 8 forced back to its initial position shown in Fig. 2.
