Abstract
604,143. Purifying liquids. PATERSON ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and DREIER, G. H. June 7, 1945, No. 14412. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXXVI] In apparatus for treating liquids, for example chlorinating or de-chlorinating water of the kind comprising a galvanic couple adapted to be immersed in the liquid undergoing treatment or in the applied chemical, and connected in a circuit in which there is set up an electromotive force in accordance with the concentration of the chemical the E.M.F. or variations thereof operating indicating and/or recording and/or controlling means, at least one of the electrodes consists of two or more different metals. In the arrangement shown the liquid to be treated is passed through a cell a of ebonite or other non-metallic material within which is a removable cage d carrying two electrodes. One of the electrodes consists of two parts b, b<SP>1</SP>, the part b for example of gold and the part b<SP>1</SP> of tungsten. The other electrode c may be made of platinum. The cage registers with slots in the cell so that it can take up only one position. The electrodes are connected to terminals e through openings f of gold or other material inert to the liquid. The terminals e form part of a circuit which includes a sensitive relay i adapted to open or close the circuit of a secondary relay k. The operating coil of the relay k is energized by a battery l or from supply mains through a transformer. The relay k opens and closes a circuit m to control a visible indicator n or an audible alarm o. The apparatus may also be used to actuate a recorder, or to shut off the supply of liquid in the event of a stoppage of the treatment, by the provision of a circuit breaker or contactor controlling the supply circuit and a motor driving a pump.
