Abstract
602,998. Concrete compactors. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and FORD, W. J. Nov. 15, 1945, No. 30630. [Class 107] A device for consolidating concrete surfaces comprises a compactor or vibrated screed 1 extending across the width of the concrete being laid and carrying means for vibrating or hammering it to tamp said concrete,. and a pair of hand-propelled carriages 11, 13 not mechanically driven which are adapted to roll along the side forms or finished concrete between which the concrete is being laid, each end of the compactor being connected to one of the carriages which are not otherwise connected together, by lifting means whereby the compactor may either rest upon the concrete supported by the carriages, or be lifted clear of the concrete for movement to a fresh position: When the compactor batten 1 has compacted the concrete beneath it air is admitted to the cylinder 7 by a port 7a via a valve (not shown) which may also cut off the air supply to the compactor hammers. The piston 8 is forced down against the spring 10 until rocking plates 13 contact the side forms and the batten 1 is raised clear of the concrete to be now supported by the four sector plates 13. A slight sideways thrust serves to move the compactor into its next position, the whole device moving laterally about pivots 12 whilst supported on the curved faces of the plates 13. The air valve is reversed, the piston 8 rises carrying the carriage beam 11 and plates 13 upwardly and clear of the ground, allowing the compactor beam 1 to contact the concrete for the next tamping operation. Stops 14 limit the sideways movement of the sectors 13.
