[Class 138(ii)] [Also in Group II] In a washing machine comprising a basket 15 rotatable about a substantially vertical axis and having limited lateral movement when carrying an eccentric load, the vibrations caused by spinning such a load are absorbed by a non-rotatable resiliently mounted mass 24. As shown, the basket consists of inner and outer perforated and imperforated parts 34, 33, and is supported on a wall 12 by a rubber &c., collar 14 which also supports, by means of a flange 14a, a power casing 16 housing a motor 19 and transmission mechanism 18 adapted to reciprocate a shaft 21 carrying an agitator 20 and to rotate the basket through a shaft 17. The weight 24, in the form of a ring surrounding the casing 16, is supported thereon by spring rods 25 or coiled or rubber springs to constitute a vibratory system, the number of vibrations per second of which is aubstantially equal to the number of revolutions per second of the basket at a predetermined constant speed of rotation. The machine is stabilized by another ring-like weight 23 secured to the bottom of the basket. To limit maximum lateral deflection, a rubber snubber 31 rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft 32 at the bottom of the casing 16, is adapted to engage a cup 30 on the frame 10. In operation, the agitator 20 is first oscillated vertically by the shaft 21 to clean the clothes in the basket, after which the basket is rotated causing liquid to be discharged centrifugally.
