[Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for welding seams in hollow bodies comprises a support to receive and rotate the body in the direction of the welding seam and a track conforming to the inside contour of the body which is mounted inside the body to support a welding machine. A platform 2, Fig. 1, is supported on a carriage 1 and has side frames 3 with horizontal shafts 5, 6 for supporting sprockets 8 ; spaced longitudinally of the frame and supporting drive chains 9. The body has end walls 14 and 15, Fig. 2, and is supported on the chains which are driven through suitable gearing 21 by a reversible motor 20. A track 24 comprising built-up sections 25, 26, Fig. 4, consisting of tee rails 28, 29, 30 connected by transverse members 32 and cleats 35, is mounted inside the body and conforms generally to the inside contour. The track supports a welding machine which has grooved wheels 42 to engage the upstanding flange of the tee rails on the track, and a drive sprocket-wheel 43 whose teeth engage in a chain secured to tee rail 29. Vertical members 36 are arranged at intervals on the track to which guard rails are secured to prevent the machine from derailment. A pendulum mechanism on the machine controlling the circuit of the motor 20 so as to drive it at varying speed in a forward or reverse direction or stop it, maintains the welding machine substantially horizontal during operation. Adjusting studs 41 on cross-members 32 allow adjustment of the track on the inside contour and a manhole 17 permits entry of the welding supply cables.
