Abstract

N1-Di-substituted melamines are prepared by reacting a secondary amine with 1,3-dicyanoguanidine. The secondary amine may have the same or different aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals. Preferably, the reaction takes place between a mineral acid salt of a secondary amine and an alkali metal salt of 1,3-dicyanoguanidine, for example, by mixing and heating to at least 60 DEG C. In examples: (1) N1-diethyl melamine is obtained by heating diethylamine hydrochloride and mono-potassium 1,3-dicyanoguanidine; (2) N1-dibutyl melamine is obtained by heating dibutylamine hydrochloride and mono-potassium 1,3-dicyanoguanidine; and (3) N1-methyl-N1-phenyl melamine is obtained by heating methylaniline hydrochloride and potassium dicyanoguanidine. Other secondary amines specified are dimethylamine, di-isopropylamine, didodecylamine, dioctadecylamine, dicyclohexylamine, nitro - N - methylanilines, ethylanilines and diphenylamine. 1,3-Dicyanoguanidine is prepared by mixing together dicyandiamide, a water-soluble alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in the presence of acetone and then adding cyanogen chloride.
