Abstract

601,486. Testing physical properties of threads, cords, wires, &c. COURTAULDS. Ltd., and BERRY, J. K. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25670. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for subjecting fibres, threads, cords, wires, &c. to repeated tensile stresses comprises two members 1, 2, rotated in synchronism, which hold the ends of the cords &c. 5 so that the latter are tensioned, the member 2 being inclined relatively to the member 1 so that each cord 5 is stretched and relaxed during each rotation of the members, and means such as a screw micrometer 11 for adjusting the distance between the members 1, 2 during operation of the apparatus whereby any permanent extension of the cords 5 can be taken up and measured. The members 1, 2 are circular plates provided with clamps 3. 4, respectively, to grip the cords. Each clamp 3 comprises a steel wing-nut and a wrought iron bolt, and the circular plate 1 is of aluminium, this arrangement ensuring an increase in clamping pressure with rise of temperature. Each clamp 4 is mounted for self-alignment on ballbearings. The member 1 is mounted on a shaft 6 supported in a pedestal 9 and driven by belt and pulley means housed partly within the pedestal. The micrometer 11 can be operated to slide an inner shaft 10 (not shown) within the shaft 6, the member 1 being secured to the shaft 10 by a pin which passes through a slot in the shaft 6. The member 2 is mounted on and rotated by a shaft 17 linked by a universal joint to the driving shaft 6. The shaft 17 is carried by a bearing in a pedestal 19 journalled in a step bearing in the base-plate 22. The. pedestal 19 can be swung to incline the member 2 by means of a weight 23 acting on an arm 26 secured to the bearing shaft of the pedestal, this shaft also having secured thereto a pointer 27 co-operating with a scale 28. The clamps 3, 4 may be replaced by knurled'screws with curved washers, and the members 1, 2 may be covered with a material which becomes tacky at high temperatures, whereby the cords 5 are firmly gripped. The apparatus may be enclosed in a casing provided with electric heaters, and thermostatic control of the heaters enable tests at predetermined temperatures to be conducted. The apparatus can be used for testing textile cords for use in motor vehicle tyres.
