Abstract

601,186. Making compound brakes; powder metallurgy. BURGESS, A. F. (Wellman Co., S. K.). Oct. 22, 1945, No. 27753. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group II] In a method of applying a powdered metal brake liner to a brake drum, a compressed briquet of metal powder having a curvature conforming to that of the drum is pressed on to the curved surface and heated to sintering temperature. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a number of superposed elements 18, 19, 20, 21, having an upper surface shaped to receive a portion 23 of a brake drum and a lower surface having a recess 28 in which is received the flange portion 27 of the drum, which is secured to the element below. The recesses 28 have upwardly converging walls 29, 31 so that the brake drum flange and a liner 32' may be clamped together by means of segmental wedges 33 and 34, the liner being on either the inside or outside of the flange. Preferably the liner is composed of a number of strips of compressed metal powder bent to the curvature of the drum flange, a suitable powder comprising copper 73 per cent, lead 14 per cent, tin 7 per cent and graphite 6 per cent, compressed at eleven tons per square inch. After assembly of the individual liner strips and brake drums has been completed, the elements 18, 19, 20, 21 are placed in an electric furnace and the elements are pressed together, so as to subject the liner strips and drum flanges to a pressure of approximately 250 lbs. per square inch. The assembly is then heated to about 1600‹ F. in order to sinter the liner strips and bond them to the drum flange, which may be coated with a protective metal to prevent oxidation. The liner may be built up from two layers, an inner one of powdered copper and the outer one of the above composition. In a modification, the liner strips are sintered before being assembled, and may be bonded to a backing strip which may be subsequently removed. Brazing.-The apparatus shown is then employed only to braze the liner strips to the drum flange. U.S.A. Specification 2,289,311 is referred to.
