Abstract

A chlorinated carboxylic ester having at least 12 carbon atoms in the carboxylic acid chain, prepared by chlorinating in solution to at least 40 per cent chlorine content, and separating the solvent by exposure to an inert liquid with vigorous agitation to give a powdery product, is used as a pour point depressor for lubricants. Various fatty oils, fats, waxes, and synthetic esters are treated.ALSO:A solution of a carboxylic ester having at least 12 carbon atoms in the carboxylic acid chain is chlorinated with chlorine gas in the presence of actinic light to at least 40 per cent chlorine content by weight, and the solvent separated by directly exposing the solution in a form having a large surface area, with vigorous agitation, to the action of an inert liquid to separate the chlorinated product in a powdery form substantially free from solvent and hydrogen chloride. Fatty oils, either drying or non-drying, e.g. linseed, soya bean, cottonseed and corn oils, synthetic esters wherein the carboxylic acid includes a straight chain of at least 12 carbon atoms with or without a ring as in naphthenic acids, and such materials as stearin, tallow, lard and ester type waxes may be used. The fatty oils may be pretreated as by bodying, blowing or oxidizing. Other components may be present, e.g. beeswax. The chlorinated products are easily soluble in many solvents, and can be made soluble in others by adding small amounts of aromatic solvents such as toluene. They have high tolerance ratios for non-solvents. They are used for surface coatings, flame - proofing agents, adhesives, binders, electric insulation and pour point depressors in lubricants. The chlorination is effected using solutions of below 50 per cent concentration to a chlorine content preferably above 55 per cent, and the product churned, for example, in methyl, ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, or a mixture of alcohol and water, or added to boiling water to separate the chlorinated product in powdery form. In examples, solutions in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform or dichlorethane are chlorinated in the presence of light and the products churned in several successive batches of methanol or added to boiling water. Various vegetable and fish oils, fats, waxes and synthetic esters are used. Examples showing the tolerance of the products for mineral spirit are also given. Specification 420,116 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also separation of a powdery product by spraying the chlorinated solution into a warm atmosphere. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
