Abstract

600,049. Twisting and winding yarn. MARQUART, A. S. Oct. 1, 1945, No. 25447. [Class 120(ii)] Apparatus for twisting and winding yarn from roving comprises a rotatable cage enclosing a bobbin &c. co-axial with the cage and a traversing mechanism longitudinally arranged in the cage, in association with a hollow spindle on the cage which supports a pair of rollers mounted to turn on transverse axes and driven by gearing as the spindle rotates, the arrangement being such that roving fed in the direction of the axis of the rotating spindle and cage passes directly into and through the nip of a pair of rollers which feed and twist the roving into yarn while delivering it through the hollow spindle to the longitudinal traversing and winding mechanism in the cage. The flyer or cage comprising end plates 11, 12 and bolts 10 is driven by a chain 15 taking on to a sprocket sleeve - 14. Freely mounted on the sleeve 14 is another sprocket sleeve 16 driven by a chain 17, the sleeves being supported in a bracket 18. The sleeve 14 is formed at its end as a disc 19 with lugs 20 supporting spindles 21 carrying gears 23, 24, which through gears 25 drive a pair of rubbercovered feed and twist rollers 26. The gears 23, which extend through slots in the disc 19, are driven from teeth 27 on the sleeve 16. The driving chains 15, 17 also drive members 40, 41 of a differential gear in reverse directions so that if the chains were moving at the same speed the middle member 38 of the differential would maintain the shaft 37 stationary. Since, however, the speed of chains 15, 17 is different, the shaft 37 drives the feed rollers 28 at the same speed as the rollers 26. If a reverse twist is required the chains 15, 17 are driven in reverse direction and the gear 33 is brought into mesh with the gear 35 for driving the rollers 28. The traverse is effected by a slide member 46 reciprocated by a double-screw 54 rotated by gears 48, 49, 53, the gear 48 being carried by a bush 47 to which is pegged the bobbin 8 dragged round by the pull of the yarn. The rod 9 is withdrawn to the left for doffing. If it is desired to effect drawing the rollers 28 may be rotated at a faster surface speed than the feed rollers 29 and the rollers 26 than the rollers 28. In a modification, power shafts 64, 65 drive friction drums 72, 73 at different surface speeds, these drums, in turn driving friction rollers 74, 75 which replace the sprockets 14, 16. The differential 78 driven by the chains 70, 71, drives the feed rollers 76. The twisting devices are carried by spring-urged brackets 61 pivoting on a spindle 62 so that each twisting and rewinding device in a frame may be drawn back from the driving rollers 72, 73. In a further modification, separate electric motors may be used for driving the cage and feed rollers.
