Abstract

600,020. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems ; interconnected valves. ELECTROL, Inc. Feb. 19, 1945, No. 4166. Convention date, May 15, 1944. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A follow-up mechanism of the type comprising a reversible motor and a manuallyoperable member, both connected to control mechanism through differential gearing in such manner that the control mechanism is moved by the manuallyoperable member to connect the power supply to the motor, and movement of the latter returns the control mechanism to neutral, is characterised in that the differential gearing comprises a pair of gears 64, 68, Fig. 1, rotatably mounted on a shaft 57 on opposite sides of a cage 66 which is secured to the shaft and carries idler gears 65, 67, and the gears 64, 68 carry hollow pulleys 60, 63 enclosing the gearing and being connected, respectively, to the manuallyoperable member and to the motor, the shaft 57 being connected to the control mechanism. This servomotor system permits the relaying of control movements of 360 degrees or more. The apparatus may be applied to the operation of aircraft wing flaps, machine tools, or gunfire control. Separate relay mechanisms actuating separate wing flaps may be controlled from a single manually-controlled member. As applied to a hydraulic fluid-pressure system, control mechanism 56 comprises a shaft 25, Fig. 2, driven by shaft 57 and carrying cams 25a, 25b which actuate spring-loaded poppettype valves 51 ... 54. When shaft 25 is rotated to the position shown, pressure liquid entering the valve casing at 47 flows through passages 51g or through passages 51f in valve 51 to the rear of the valve whence it passes the now-opened closure surface 51c to flow through passage 51k and groove 55 to port 48 leading to one end of the servomotor. Exhaust fluid from the servomotor enters the valve casing at 50 and flows through the opening provided by valve 53 to exhaust port 49. Rotation of shaft 25 will allow valves 51, 53 to close and will open valves 52, 54 to actuate the servomotor in the opposite direction. In a modification, the fluid-pressure servomotor system is replaced by an electrical system employing a reversing motor (see Group XXXVIII). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification wherein the differential gearing is not enclosed by the pulleys. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
