599,709. Lathes. RELIEPHOGRAPHIE, SOC. POUR L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES DE PHOTOGRAPHIE EN RELIEF M. BONNET. Aug. 17,1945, No. 21064. Convention date, June 35, 1941. [Class 83 (iii)] In a lathe having a stationary tool holder the work is mounted on a shaft between two selfaligning bearings and rotated and moved axially relative to the tool. The shaft 9, on which the work 100 is mounted, is ribbed at 10 for driving engagement with a sleeve 11, an arrangement of ball bearings, contacting the sides of the rib and the shaft, preventing jamming during axial movement through the sleeve. The sleeve and shaft are supported in three adjustable, self-aligning bearings 5 which are of harder metal than the shaft. Bearing against the other end of the shaft is a feedscrew 23 rotated by the shaft through a pin connection 21, a steel ball 20 being interposed between the members. The feed-screw imparts axial movement to the shaft, the resultant helix on the work being dependent on the pitch of the screw. The nut 24 is of harder metal than the threaded shaft and is adjustable for wear. A counterweight 18 is provided to relieve the thrust on the feed-screw. The machine may be bodily inclined to obviate play in the members of the machine, and a gear reduction drive between the shaft and feed-screw may be employed to vary the helix.
