Abstract

599,613. Magnetic tests and measurements. WIIG, R. C. O. Sept. 27, 1944, No. 18514. [Class 37] An apparatus for determining the percentage iron content in a mineral ore comprises a coil for the insertion of a core containing a sample of the ore, the field of the coil in the absence of the sample being neutralized by that of a second coil or a permanent magnet, and indicating means responsive to the difference in the field strengths to give a measure of the iron content. In the Figure, laminated iron members 4, 5 together with counterbalanced solenoids 2, 3 form the field magnets of a moving coil instrument. A sample of the ore in a container is inserted into solenoid 2, so unbalancing the two fields and deflecting the coil 1. The scale of the instrument may be calibrated to read directly in iron content or the pointer made to return to zero by the measured movement of an iron core 9 into the solenoid 3. In apparatus for measuring very small contents, an additional small permanent magnet 10 is provided and is adjusted to counteract any residual magnetism in the instrument. The Specification also describes measurement of the Fe content of ores of low - susceptibility, but requiring higher coercive forces by causing the change in magnetic field to deflect the beam of a cathode-ray tube.
