Abstract

An electrical conductor is insulated with a covering consisting wholly or partly of one or more highly polymeric linear esters from glycols of the series OH(CH2)nOH wherein n is an integer greater than 1 but less than 10 and terephthalic acid or ester-forming derivatives thereof. Such esters are described in Specification 578,079. A film or successive films of ester may be deposited by drawing the conductor through a solution thereof in a solvent such as ortho-cresol, cresylic acid, xylenols, a solution of phenol in cresols or mixtures of phenols with tetrachlorethane or monochlorbenzene and evaporating the solvent, or a dispersion of the ester in a non-solvent, e.g. a volatile petroleum hydrocarbon or a latent solvent may be employed, subsequent heat treatment fusing the particles of polyester to form a continuous coating; or the molten polyester, if desired, with a little solvent to lower the melting-point may be extruded to yield the insulating covering; or the conductors may be wrapped with filaments, films, yarns, fabrics, tape, ribbons or films formed of the polyesters and/or of other materials coated or impregnated with the polyesters. Twistless yarns, (see Group IX), are particularly useful. The filaments or similar materials may be combined with similar materials formed for example from cellulosic material, silk, nylon, polythene, spun glass, asbestos, p or mineral wool. The wrapped conductors may be heated to fuse some or all of the materials used in the coatings. Examples are given employing a polyester obtained by heating dimethyl terephthalate, and ethylene glycol in presence of magnesium oxide and in an inert atmosphere at 197 DEG C. for 4 hours. Methanol distilled off. Excess glycol was then distilled off at higher temperature and lower pressure. The melt was extruded from the reaction vessel.
