Abstract

598,879. Rotarywing aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and BENNETT, J. A. J. Sept. 21, 1945, No. 24536. [Class 4] In a rotary-wing aircraft having a, power-driven rotor and a forward propeller, the latter being located at this side of the fuselage so that the rotor torque reaction is balanced by the moment of the propeller thrust, the plane of the rotor is inclinable so that by inclining it backwardly the forward thrust of the propeller may be balanced to achieve zero forward speed and by decreasing this backward inclination translational speed may be achieved, and the rotor is arranged for variation of its collective pitch automatically with variation in rotor power as in Specification 598,878. The rotor plane may also be inclined for pitching and rolling control. The rotor pitch is normally within the autorotative range, and the disc loading is sufficiently low that the aircraft has a low sinking speed at steep angles of glide. The pitch of the propeller is adjustable for controlling and/or trimming the aircraft in yaw. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the blades b of the rotor are mounted as in Specification 598,878 by drag links c on a rotor head d so that their pitch varies automatically with the rotor power. A power unit f is coupled to the propeller e through gearing g and a shaft h, and to the rotor through a 'one-way clutch j and a shaft k. A control lever m, universally mounted in the cockpit, is connected by a link o with one arm of a bellcrank lever p, the other arm of which is connected by a vertical rod q with the rotor head d for tilting the latter about a transverse axis when the lever is moved in a fore-and-aft direction. The lever m is also connected by a laterally extending link r (see Fig. 3, not shown) and a bell-crank lever s with a rod t which is coupled to a bell-crank lever u and rod v for tilting the rotor head about a fore-and-aft axis when' the lever is moved laterally. A pedaloperated bar w is connected eccentrically with a link x which is connected through a bellcrank lever z, link 12 and bell-crank lever 13 with a transversely extending link 15 (see Fig. 5, not shown) actuating the pitch-control mechanism of the propeller e.
