[Class 124] In a method of forming glass lenses and like optical devices, a film of one ingredient of a glass attacking composition is formed on a glass blank and a film of another ingredient of the composition is formed on the surface of a mould which is a negative of the device to be produced, the blank and mould being then brought into contact to produce a glass attacking film on the high points of the blank. As shown, a glass blank 1, which may be roughly ground to the form required, held in a cooled support 9 has a film of sulphuric acid formed on it by a perforated pipe 62, and a mould 12 coated with platinum has a film of sodium fluoride deposited on it. The mould is brought into contact with the blank by a reciprocating movement and hydrofiuoric acid, which dissolves a small quantity of the glass, is formed at the points of contact. After the separation of mould from blank, the surfaces of both are cleaned by a blast of steam through the perforated pipes 71 and 75 and the process repeated until the blank assumes the form of the mould. The sequence of operations may be controlled by an electric motor 50 driving cams 54, 55 and 80. The sulphuric acid film may be formed on the mould and the sodium fluoride film on the blank.
