Abstract

Compositions for the prevention and destruction of weeds comprise a phenoxy-, phenylmercapto-, phenylimino-, naphthoxy-, naphthylmercapto-, or naphthyl-imino-aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or a lower alkyl ester, alkali metal or ammonium salt or amide or thioamide thereof in association with a non-solvent carrier or diluent, the concentration of the acid or stated derivative thereof being at least 0.1 per cent by weight of the total composition. The phenyl and naphthyl nuclei may contain one or more substituents such as halogen, hydroxyl, NH2, HSO3, NO2, or an alkyl group, e.g. methyl, ethyl or propyl. The following representative compounds are specified: phenoxy acetic acid, parachloro phenoxy-acetic acid, sodium parachloroacetate, parachlorophenoxy acetamide, 2.3.4.6-tetrachlorophenoxy acetic acid, pentachlorophenoxy acetic acid, 2.4.6-tribromophenoxy acetic acid, phenoxy-alpha-propionic acid, 2.4.dichlorophenoxy-alpha-propionic acid, phenyl-imino-acetic acid, phenyl - mercapto - acetic acid, 1 - naphthoxy acetic acid, potassium 1-naphthoxy acetate, 1-naphthoxy-alpha-propionic acid, 1-naphthyl-imino-acetic acid, 1-naphthyl-imino-acetamide, 1-naphthyl-mercapto-acetic acid, b -naphthoxy-acetic, acid, b -naphthoxyacetamide, b -naphthoxy-alpha-propionamide, and the methyl and ethyl esters of any of the oxy, mercapto or imino monocarboxylic acids. In liquid form the compositions comprise also wetting, dispersing or emulsifying agents such as butyl alcohol, carbitol (diethyleneglycol), Aerosol, sulphonated vegetable oils (e.g. sulphonated castor oil, corn oil, peanut oil and soya bean oil), and polyalkylene products of the formula RO.(C2H4O)n.R1 where R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkyl-aryl or acyl group of at least 10 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkyl-aryl or acyl group or a hydrogen atom and n is an integer greater than 2, e.g. "Tween No. 20" and "Triton N.E." (Registered Trade Marks), and in the dry form they may contain conventional herbicides (e.g. sodium chlorate, ammonium sulphamate, sodium dinitro-orthocresylate or sodium arsenite) with smaller amounts of the herbicides of the invention, an inert filler such as talc or bentonite, a wetting agent in dry form such as Alkanol, an acidifying agent (e.g. citric, tartaric, succinic, malic, maleic, fumaric or sulphanic acid) and a buffer salt.
