Abstract

598,002. Torque rods. JAGUAR CARS, Ltd., and HEYNES, W. M. Aug. 28, 1945, No. 22052. [Class 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A road vehicle suspension comprises a through axle casing 15 for a pair of driving wheels each end of which is shackled below the axle to a transverse arm 13 fast on a longitudinally extending axially-located shaft 22 journalled about its axis at spaced points 23, 24 with respect to the chassis frame, resilient means opposing movements of the arms 13 due to the load. As shown the shafts 22 are of tubular form and the resilient means comprise torsion rods 33 each being rigidly secured at one end to the respective arm 13 and being in splined engagement with a portion of the chassis frame at the other end 35. Each shaft 22 is carried by plain and thrust roller bearings 23, 24 respectively. Shackles 12 connecting the arms 13 to the axle casing are of H-section, the limbs of which are widely spaced laterally to avoid excessive torsional stressing of the casing, and have rubber bush type pivotal connections. A strut type shock absorber may be mounted between each arm 13 and the chassis frame above and in an alternative construction a strut type compression member, coiled spring or compressed gas unit may be mounted in this position to constitute the resilient means in lieu of the torsion rods 33. The shafts 22 are normally mounted horizontally in order to absorb driving and braking torque but they may be inclined slightly upwardly to counteract the effect of pitching movement on acceleration and braking. Transverse sway is controlled by a laterally disposed link pivotally mounted at its ends to the axle casing and chassis frame respectively.
