Abstract
A method for imparting a permanent colour to cellulosic fibrous materials such as fabrics, comprises immersion for a short length of time in cuprammonium solution in which is disposed a finely-divided coloured solid substance and a dispersing agent, the solution dissolving the surface of the fabric, and the time of immersion being such that the inner part of the fibres is not attacked, and then drying, the finely-divided solid substance being permanently incorporated in the fabric. The materials to be treated may be spun or woven fibres, paper, cardboard, wood, straw, raffia, grass, ropetwine, cellulose and regenerated cellulose. The particles to be incorporated should be of particle size up to 5 microns. They may be particles of lamp-black, carbon black, zinc, arsenic or antimony compounds, fast-to-light pigments such as copper phthalocyanine or chromium oxide. There may also be present fireproofing substances such as chlorinated rubber or paraffin, or substances having toxic effects on micro-organisms, such as copper oxide. Mixtures of two or more substances may be used as, for instance, in making a fireproof fabric toxic to mildew. Suitable dispersing agents may be sodium lignin sulphonate or ethyl cellulose. The solvent may be removed from the material after treatment by any known method, such as neutralization with acids or alkalis, washing out with water, evaporation or the like. In examples, 30 lbs. of a fine particle size carbon black dispersion in sodium lignin sulphonate is added to 1000 gallons of cuprammonium solution containing 14 lbs. metallic copper per 100 gallons of 10 per cent ammonia. About 1200 yards of 30 inch cotton cloth are immersed for about 90 seconds in the solution, passed through squeeze rolls and dried. To produce a fungicide dispersion, 30 lbs. of copper oxide are used in place of carbon black, and to produce a coloured fireproof fabric chlorinated rubber is used in addition to the carbon black. Specifications 6123/06, [Class 140], 25245/11, [Class 42 (i)], and 338,654, [Class 15 (ii)], are referred to.
