Abstract
597,428. Packing-machines. SALFISBERG, L. L. Aug. 1, 1945, No. 19820. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1944. [Class 94 (i)] A machine which is especially applicable for packaging deformable articles such as rubber rings without injury thereto is formed with means for feeding two opposed layers D of metal foil, paper, or the materials known under the Registered Trade Marks " Cellophane " or " Pliofilm," preferably of thermoplastic nature to enable the films to be secured together by heat at certain zones by the action of sealing surfaces 10 in rollers 1, 2 arranged between spaces 8 in the rollers which shape the packing material into pockets for receiving the article A which is forced into the recesses by means of presser members 16 associated with pusher members 17. The articles are fed in pairs and the layers D receive the pairs in side-by-side relation from carriers 52 on a conveyer G which feed the rings A to separate grooves in a feed table 35 from which they are fed by pusher devices 41 on pivoted arms 40 mounted in a carriage F attached to a reciprocating member 24 to which the presser member 16 is attached. As the carriage F moves to the left the arms 40 are moved into contact with the table 35 by means of a pivoted arm geared to the arms 40 and formed with a roller moving in a groove which causes the arm to move clockwise as the carriage moves in one direction and counterclockwise in the other direction, so that as the carriage F returns to the right no feed occurs. The rings pass through apertures 18 in a shoot 19, as shown in Fig. 3, and are advanced towards the rollers 1, 2 by the pusher 17 until a lug 34<1> on the pusher engages a fixed member when the presser 16 advances relatively to the pusher permitted by a yielding connection between these members. The ring A is thus deformed to conform to the shape of the recesses 8, and the layers D are forthwith sealed by the surfaces 10. The rollers 1, 2 also score the layers D in zones or lines L between the article containing departments by means of bevelled blades 11 on roller 1 and platens 12 on roller 2, and each blade 11 is preferably formed with a prong 13 at each side which with corresponding notches 14 in roller 2 form perforations 15 in the package adjacent the scored lines to facilitate tearing open of the individual packages. The package strip may be divided longitudinally between the two rows of articles by means of co-operating slitting knives on shafts 67 which are fitted with brushes 68 to maintain the package strip under tension. The package strip is now severed into individual packages by mechanism I, Fig. 2, comprising a roller 57 formed with elastic ribs 61 made of rubber-covered steel strips which coact with slots 59 in a roller 56. The ribs tear the strip along the scored zones L, Fig. 1, formed by the rollers 1, 2. The severed ends of the strips are ejected from the slots 59 by means of elastic bands 64 fitted ground the roller 56 and extending across the slots. The roller 56 is formed with cut-away zones 60 to provide a clearance for the article-containing compartments of the strip D. The rollers 56, 57 may be driven by clutch mechanism arranged to cause the tearing mechanism to sever the strip into sections containing two or more packages B. The rollers are all driven from a shaft 7 fitted with a cam 32 for actuating the feed mechanism, and the feed conveyer is driven by a chain drive under control of a clutch 81.
