Abstract

<PICT:0597332/III/1> An adsorbent for use in sugar-refining and other purification treatments is made by heating a mixture of a basic insoluble calcium phosphate that is more alkaline than hydroxyapatite, with clay and carbonizable organic matter, the mixture being pulverized before being heated. The phosphate may be formed in contact with the clay and carbonaceous matter as described in Specification 561,047 and the mixture pulverized but preferably the phosphate is formed and pulverized, then mixed with clay and carbonaceous matter and the mixture pulverized. The pulverization may take place in jet pulverizers or high speed p mills to produce particles of size about 10 to 70 microns. Fuller's earth is preferably used as the clay base and starch, soybean meal or dried blood may be used as carbonaceous matter. The adsorbent may be made as indicated by the flow sheet shown. Pulverized hydrated lime from a container 1, water from a tank 2, and phosphate from a tank 3 are passed to a mixer 4 in which basic calcium phosphate is precipitated. The slurry is passed to a tank 6 thence to a filter 7 where the cake is washed to remove all water-soluble material. The filter cake is passed successively to a drier 8, crusher 9 and pulverizer 10. The pulverized phosphate is then passed to a storage bin 11 from which it is fed to a mixer 14 together with clay from a bin 12 and starch from a bin 13. The mixture is pulverized in a hammer mill 10a, then mixed with water and passed to an extrusion machine 16. The material passes to a drier 18, then to crushing equipment 19 and then to screens 20. The sized material is then fed to a retort 21 in which it is heated to about 550 DEG C. to 650 DEG C. in the absence of air. The fired material may then be passed to a classifier 22 to be separated with portions of different particle size.ALSO:An adsorbent for use in sugar-refining and other purification treatment is made by heating a mixture of a basic insoluble calcium phosphate, that is more alkaline than hydroxyapatite, with clay and carbonizable organic matter, the mixture being pulverized before being heated.
