[Class 138 (ii)] In an iron for steaming and pressing of the type having a reservoir and a steam generating chamber delivering steam through holes in the ironing surface of the sole plate, the needle valve 38, Figs. 1 and 4, admitting water to the steam chamber 17 in the sole plate is operated by turning a tube 40 by a hollow knob 43 in which seats a cup 56 which can be depressed with its rod 55 to lower a valve 52 against a spring 54 to open inlet holes and allow water poured into the cup 56, which is perforated, to pass into the reservoir. The tube 40 is linked to a head 39 threaded into a tube 32, in turn threaded into a bush 33 rigid in the bottom of the reservoir, to which bush a collar 34 on the tube 32 clamps a closure plate 25 for the chamber 17. The sole plate 10, Figs. 1 and 2, is heated electrically by a sheathed resistance conductor 12 embedded in a U-shaped upright rib 15, Fig. 2, which surrounds the steam generating chamber 17. The rear ends of the chamber lead to side channels in a cover member 20 which meet in the front over a chamber 18 in the sole plate to discharge therefrom by ports 19 into recesses 19a formed in the pressing surface. The closure plate 25 has a flange and is secured by a clamping ring 27 and screws 28, 29 over a gasket 30 firmly to the sole plate. The reservoir is vented through a steam dome 58 having a vent tube 59 discharging through the handle with a deflector 60 to direct steam away from the hand of the operator. Thermostatic control and setting means 61, 64 preferably of the type described in Specification 546,203, [Group XIII], is provided.
