Abstract
Soluble solid aluminium phosphates are produced by mixing and reacting separate dispersions in an inert aqueous liquid, of finely divided aluminium hydroxide (A12O33H2O) and finely divided phosphorus pentoxide or phosphoric acid in proportions to yield an Al to PO4 ratio of 1/3 to 2/3 , controlling the water content of the reactants and the loss of water by evaporation being controlled to yield a product having a water content ranging from zero for a 1 : 3 ratio, to over 25 per cent. by weight for a 1 1/2 : 3 ratio, and to about 35 per cent. for the 2 : 3 ratio, and separating. Dispersion and mixing may be aided by agitation and promoters, e.g., oleic or other fatty acid. Sufficient inert liquid, e.g., light hydrocarbons, kerosene, toluene, xylene, heavy gasoline fractions &c. is used to absorb the heat of reaction and prevent the temperature rising beyond any desired limits, e.g., 160-180 DEG F. The product separates as a heterogeneous phase which cools to a resinous conchoidal glass. Continuous or batch operation is feasible. Examples describe the preparation of mono, Al (H2PO4)3, sesqui, and di, Al2 (HPO4)3 aluminium phosphates. A chart shows variations of properties with composition and water content. The products are useful in binders.
