Abstract

596,889. Indicators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and DALY, C. T. Aug. 3, 1945, No. 20005. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrical instrument has a photographically sensitive scale which is graduated by recording thereon a linear trace produced on a cathode - ray screen when the instrument response is correct. As applied to a variable oscillator 1, Fig. 1, standard frequencies from a harmonic generator 11 are selected at 12 and applied to a balanced modulator 14 to modulate an oscillation from 15 ; the sum and difference frequencies are applied to a similar modulator 16 to which the variable oscillation is also applied, and the output is passed through a filter 17 tuned to the frequency of the oscillation from 15 so that the cathode ray is deflected when the frequencies of 1 and 12 are identical. The invention is also applicable to a variable oscillator of the heterodyne type, Fig. 2, (not shown). As applied to the calibration of a variable resistance, the resistance is connected in a Wheatstone bridge for comparison with a standard resistance, and the out-ofbalance voltage is applied to deflect the cathode ray off the screen, so that as balance is reached a linear trace is made on the screen for recording on the scale. Specifications 576,192 and 583,246, [Group XXXVI], are referred to.
