Abstract

New quaternary compounds useful in textile-processing are prepared by heating condensation products of primary fatty acid amides, the corresponding mono-acyl ureas and analogous esters of carbamic and allophanic acids with fatty alcohols, or of the methylol derivatives thereof, with a lower alkyl ether of a methylol derivative of melamine, with a salt of a tertiary amine and preferably also simultaneously with formaldehyde until a water-soluble product is obtained; by "a lower alkyl ether" is meant a methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl ether. The reaction may be carried out at between 40 DEG and 80 DEG C. and in the presence of an organic solvent such as benzene, dioxan or, advantageously, a tertiary amine the salt of which is used in the process of the invention. The condensation products employed as starting materials may be prepared as described in Specification 593,717. Tertiary amine salts specified are those of triethylamine, trimethylamine, pyridine, a - and g -picoline and triethanolamine. The formaldehyde is preferably used in a polymericform such as paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene. The products give foaming aqueous solutions and decompose when heated. They may be applied to textile fabrics, especially fabrics containing cellulosic fibres, to give them properties of softness, crease-resistance and water-repellence unaffected by alkaline soap washing and dry cleaning. The fabrics are impregnated with a solution or suspension of one or more of the substances in water or a volatile organic liquid and subsequently given a short heat treatment at an elevated temperature, whereby the quarternary salt is decomposed. The presence of an acid-binding agent, for example, sodium acetate, cyanate or thiocyanate during the treatment prevents tendering. The quaternary salts may be used in conjunction with other crease-resistance agents such as dimethylolurea or thriurea or their lower alkyl ethers, with formaldehyde condensation products of amino diazines or triazines or their lower alkyl ethers; or in conjunction with solutions of poly-valent metal salts, for example, aluminium acetate; other water-repellent agents may also be added, (see Group VIII). In examples: (1) a condensation product obtained by heating together methylol stearamide and methoxy methyl melamine at 135 DEG C. under reduced pressure until bubbling ceases, is heated with pyridine, its hydrochloride and paraformaldehyde at 60 DEG C. for 8 hours and the product precipitated from the mixture by acetone; cotton gaberdine is impregnated with a methylated spirits paste of the product dispersed in water and baked; similar products are obtained by reaction of the same condensation product used in (1), paraformaldehyde and either triethylamine and its hydrochloride or pyridine and glacial acetic acid, formic acid or stearic acid; (2) a condensation product of methylol octadecyl carbamate and methoxymethylmelamine prepared as above, is heated as in (1) with paraformaldehyde, pyridine and its hydrochloride; (3) a condensation product of stearamide and hexamethoxymethylmelamine, prepared as above, is reacted as in (1) with paraformaldehyde, and pyridine and glacial acetic acid or pyridine treated with hydrogen chloride, the product of the latter modification being used in the treatment of cotton gaberdine as in (1). The paraformaldehyde used in these examples may be omitted and a water-soluble product still obtained.
