Abstract

596,016. Testing gears. KODAK, Ltd. July 13, 1945, No. 17971. Convention date, July 13, 1944. [Class 106 (ii)] A gear-testing machine includes a gear-testing tool mounted to move on a slideway provided on the base of the machine, and an arm hinged to a post movably mounted on the base, the angular position of said arm with respect to the slideway being determined by a gauge means including a post extending upwardly from the base and carrying an accurately formed sleeve provided with an accurately formed surface which extends axially of the gauge post and engages a second arm carried by and extending from the movable post. As shown, the base 1 has a V-shaped pair of rails 3, beneath which is an undercut slideway 5 in which runs a slide 6, provided with a handle 17 and the movement of which is limited by stops 7 and 9. A pin upstanding from the slide 6 engages in a notch in a gear-testing tool, shown as a master worm section 15, which slides in the rails 3. A gear G to be tested is supported in a holder carried by an arm 28 mounted by means of ball bearings on a member 60 carried by a post 29 which may be elevated or lowered by a hand wheel 61. A pad 20 is formed at one end of the worm section 15 to define the elevation of its pitch circle, and a pad 52 on the gear holder similarly defines the theoretical pitch circle of the gear to be tested. The arm 28 carries a pad 31 which is contacted by the feeler of a dial gauge 33 which may be initially set to zero when the pads 20, 52 on the worm section and gear holder are in contact. The worm section may then be moved along the slide by means of the handle 17 when inaccuracies in the teeth of the gear will deviate the dial gauge pointer. In order to maintain the gear at the correct angle to the worm section, the post 29, on which the arm 28 is carried, also carries an arm 64 having a spherical extremity which engages in one of a number of grooves in a sleeve 67 slidably mounted on a vertical post. The grooves, which are of different depths, may bear indications to correspond to similar indications on different worm sections and a number of interchangeable sleeves may be provided. The arm 28 may be retained in an inoperative position by means of a latch which may be released by raising a lever 80. The inclination and elevation of the dial gauge feeler 32 may be adjusted by means of a clamping screw 45 and elevating nut 40, Which may be locked by a screw 44, respectively. The gear holders may be of the types described in Specification 596,017. Specification 577,218 also is referred to.
