[Class 6 (ii)] Relates to mowing-machines wherein the frame has a 'pair of side members 12 spaced apart by transverse members 13, 14 and 15 and a detachable unit comprising a rotating cutter mounted between a pair of side plates 26. According to the invention the frame side members are disposed close to the sides of the removable unit and the forward edges of the side plates of the latter are slotted 27, to engage pivotally the cross-bar 14, the rotating cutter being fixed on a spindle 24 which projects through an arcuate slot 54 in one of the members 12, this end of the spindle having a detachable gear wheel 57 for transmitting the drive from a supporting roller 10 to said spindle, whereby the detachable unit can readily be removed by taking off said gearwheel and then pivoting the unit about the axis of the crossbar 14. The side plates 26 are connected by a transverse bar 30 whose reduced threaded ends project through arcuate slots 32 in the frame members 12. The unit may be locked in any desired position by means of washers, suitably apertured to fit over a flat on the end of the bar 30, being advanced along the threaded end 31 by nuts 39 until the V-sectioned ribs on the washers interlock with racks of teeth 40 in the slot 32. A grass deflector 41 provided with a shear blade 44 extends between the side plates 26 to which it is pivoted at 43, about which point it can be adjusted by a lug 45 carrying a threaded pin 46 engaged by nuts 47, 48 on opposite sides of the bar 30, said pin passing through said bar. An eccentric may be provided on the pivot 43 for correct alignment of shear blade. A cover encloses both sprocket wheels and their connecting chain. The machine may be hand or power propelled. The first Provisional Specification describes the unit to be pivoted on the spindle of the front rollers or on a pair of projections on the inner sides of the main frame members. The second Provisional Specification describes a modified washer which is positively withdrawn with the nut by means of hook-like projections.
