Abstract
595,484. Chimney cowls. LEARDI, T. A., LONG, E. J., and STEPHENS, M. J. July 5, 1945, No. 17133. [Class 25] In a chimney cowl of the kind comprising a pipe 10, for attachment to the flue, surmounted by two or more superposed frustoconical members 13a, 13b within which is mounted an inverted conical baffle 18, the latter is located wholly within the uppermost member 13b with its base level with externally shrouded vent-holes 19 and its apex below this level. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the baffle 18 is supported so as to be vertically moveable by rods 17 slidable in supporting lugs 16 and the vents 19 are shrouded by downwardly inclined pipes 20. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the baffle 18 is fixedly supported by stays 21 and carries a strip 22 in which and an upper strip 25 is journalled a rotatable spindle 23 carrying wind vanes 24 and scrapers 26, 27, 28, the latter serving, on rotation, to keep the inner surface of member 13b, the lower surface of baffle 18, and the outer surface of the upper end of member 13a free from soot.
