Abstract
595,445. Gems. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. July 13, 1945, No. 17907. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Class 43] A unicrystalline body of synthetic corundum is annealed to improve its resistance to splitting by heating it to between 1600‹ C. and 2000‹C., holding it at that temperature for a while and then cooling it to room temperature. The body should be cooled slowly to between 1000‹ C. and 1500‹ C. at a progressively increasing rate over a period of time greater than 2 hours, the rate thereafter being greatly increased so long as it is not sufficiently rapid to cause breakage. A formula is given for a suitable cooling curve.
