Abstract
595,376. Wave-guides. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 27, 1945, No. 10732. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1943. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] In a wave-guide system, an adjustable tuning screw or probe is arranged so that the portion adjacent the aperture through which the screw enters the guide is at earth potential, and the contact between the screw and its supporting means is at a current node. The invention is described as applied to a frequency changer for a modulated carrier signal applied at the lefthand end of a wave-guide 3. At the righthand end, a local oscillator 81 feeds energy through a probe 79 to a resonant chamber 83 which is coupled by an adjustable probe 87 to guide 3. The local wave and the modulated signal wave are detected together in a detector 13 to provide an intermediate frequency output from the secondary of transformer T1. The wave-guide 3 is tuned by tuning screws 55, 57 comprising a half-wave sleeve 61 forming with screw 65, 77 a concentric line. Contact between sleeve 61 and screw 65 is made by spring clips 67, 69 which engage screw 65 at points which are an odd number of quarter wavelengths from the junction of sleeve 61 and guide 3, these points being current nodes. Cylindrical part 77 is a quarter wavelength long. The variable coupling screw 97 is similarly connected to supporting sleeve 93 by spring elements 91, 95 spaced a quarter wavelength from the boundary of resonant chamber 83. The detector comprises a wedge-shaped silicon crystal 13 having a knife edge in engagement with a tungsten wire 19 at right angles to the knife edge. The detector elements are enclosed in a glass or ceramic sleeve 23.
