Abstract
The tendency of materials consisting wholly or partly of wool to shrink is reduced and their abrasion resistance increased by treating them with a solution of a compound having the formula <FORM:0594901/IV/1> in which R1 and R2 are alkyl or aryl groups and X1 and X2 are chlorine or bromine, in a non-reactive solvent. Suitable compounds, which are said to polymerize and deposit a resin on the wool, are dimethyl silicon dichloride, dimethyl silicon dibromide, diethyl silicon dichloride, diphenyl silicon dichloride, cetyl methyl silicon dichloride and methyl phenyl silicon dichloride. The woollen material, which may be treated at any stage from the raw material to the finished yarns, fabrics and garments, is immersed in the solution at raised temperature, removed, the excess solution extracted, immersed in water, removed, dried and, if desired, heated at a temperature of 90 DEG -110 DEG C. Examples are given in which wool is boiled in a solution of dimethyl silicon dichloride in carbontetrachloride, removed, squeezed, immersed in water with squeezing and agitation, removed, dried in current of warm air and heated at 110 DEG C. for half an hour. The material is finally soaped. Specifications 561,136; 572,740, 575,675 and 575,696, [all in Group VIII], are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, compounds may also be employed in which X1 and X2 are alkoxy groups.
