Abstract

A contact tower 1 for the catalytic conversion of gases under pressure, e.g., carbon monoxide with steam, includes an inner removable filling unit consisting of a number of superposed and interlocked baskets P1, P2, P3, P4 charged with catalyst and a double heat-exchanger for preheating the gases, one portion being the annular space 31 between the inner wall of the tower and the outer wall of the unit, and the other being a bundle of heat-exchanging tubes 16 passing through each basket. Blocked tubes 17 may be suspended inside tubes 16 to confine gas flow to an annular space. The baskets may be cylinders constructed of "Sicromal" (Registered Trade Mark) alloy, Chromesco steel, or soft boiler steel and having vertical ribs and a six-sector floor 9 supported on horizontal struts and perforated to allow passage of both tubes and gases. Pyrometer sockets may be provided. The tower may have asbestos and diatomite brick linings and may be provided in the annular space 31 with two helical baffles 32. Gases from the inlet 27 flow down the annular space 31, up the tubes 16, <PICT:0594733/III/1> down through successive catalyst layers and leave by an expansion tube 29. Inlet gases may be bye-passed direct to the catalyst unit for temperature control by the line 26 and expansion worm 24.
