Abstract
Decorative and protective coating compositions are prepared by grinding 1 part by weight of a vinyl resin containing polymerized vinyl chloride with from 2 to 4 parts of a volatile liquid capable of swelling the resin at room temperature sufficient to prevent settling, but insufficient to form a complete solution. Preferably, the volatile liquid consists of 1 part of an active solvent for the resin and 2-50 parts of a diluent miscible therewith. Specified solvents are cyclohexanone, isophorone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl amyl ketone, dioxane, acetone, isopropyl acetate, butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, di-(butoxyethyl) phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, mesityl oxide, methyl isobutyl ketone and ethoxy-ethyl acetate; diluents are xylol, toluol, naphtha, hydrogenated naphtha, the methyl, ethyl and butyl ethers of ethylene glycol, tetrahydronaphthalene, ethyl alcohol and water (provided the solvent is water miscible in the proportions used). Vinyl resins which may be used include polyvinyl chloride, after-halogenated polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl esters of the lower aliphatic acids or alkyl esters of a -b -unsaturated acids. The compositions may contain plasticisers and stabilizers, e.g. diphenylol propane-formaldehyde, urea - formaldehyde and amino - triazineformaldehyde condensation products, phospholipids, e.g. cephaline, lecithin, and organic lead salts or soaps. Coloured compositions are prepared by the use of pigments, dyes and fillers. Surfaces may be coated (see Group VIII) and baked, e.g. at between 280 DEG and 400 DEG F. In applying multiple coatings each is separately baked. Suitable substrates are metal, e.g. steel, tinplate, black iron, fabrics, paper, cellulosic sheet material, wood, wallboard and glass. The compositions alone or together with other resinous materials may be used as adhesives, e.g. in the manufacture of laminated materials.
