Abstract

Vat dyestuffs are obtained by heating a 4-aminoanthraquinone-2 : 1-(N)-acridone of the formula <FORM:0593804/IV/1> the Bz ring of which is free from substituents, with an unsaturated aromatic acid or a functional derivative thereof, which may be substituted in the nucleus with halogen, hydrocarbon residues or acylamino groups, preferably in the presence of an inert solvent such as nitrobenzene or dichlorobenzene. If desired, an acylamino group may be introduced into the acid residue. In examples, 4-aminoanthraquinone-2 : 1-(N)-acridone is heated with (1) cinnamoyl chloride; (2) meta-bromocinnamoyl chloride, p-bromocinnamoyl chloride or o- or p-chlorocinnamoyl chloride; (3) p-phenylcinnamoylchloride or p-nitro-cinnamoylchloride (the nitro product thus obtained being reduced and acylated with benzoyl, p-chlorobenzoyl, p-bromobenzoyl, p - diphenyl - carboxylic acid chloride). In example (4) cotton or viscose artificial silk is dyed from a hydrosulphate vat of the product obtained in (1) fast blue shades.
