Abstract

593,580. Dough-rolling and slicing machines. LINNEMAN, R. H., and GANNON, J. J. July 3, 1944, No. 12622. [Class 87 (ii)] A bun-making machine is adapted to roll spirally a sheet of dough, move the roll along in the direction of its axis and sever slices from the roll with rapidly operating shears. A sheet of dough 58, Fig. 1, moves along an endless belt 12 to a roller 24 which is rotated in the direction shown by machinery which also serves to operate the shears and the belt. This roller is disposed at an angle to the sides of the belt so. that the dough will be formed into an elongated spiral roll 59 which will move continuously in the direction of its axis past the shearing blades 34, 35. These blades are specially shaped, Fig. 4, to encompass the roll 59 and have sharpened edges 45. They are mounted on concentric shafts 36, 37 driven to rotate the shears in opposite directions. To enable slices of different sizes to be severed the speed of the shears can be varied by manually adjustable mechanism. In a modification, Figs. 7, 8, the blade 135 is fixed and the blade 134 coupled to the shaft 36 by a spring 60. A spring-loaded pin 62 stops the blade in the position shown and prevents it from moving until the spring 60 is wound up sufficiently to cause the blades 134 to move the pin 62 out of its path. The unwinding of the spring then causes the blade to shear rapidly through the roll and to rotate into its initial position against the stop 62. In a modification (not shown) the blade 134 is coupled by two springs to a pin passing through the shaft 36. Either of these trigger devices can be applied to both blades instead of to one. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the cranks 72, 72 fixed to the shafts. 73, 73 have pins 71, 71 engaging in slots 70, 70 on the shears. Rotary oscillation of the shafts 73 causes oscillating motion of the blades about a pivot 74.
