Abstract
593,539. Radio signalling; testing radiolocation apparatus. SOLLEY, A. E., and GIRLING, F. E. J. June 2, 1945, No. 13928. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] An echo-simulating device for use in testing radiolocation apparatus comprises an antenna 1 and an input and mixer circuit 2 fed by a local oscillator 3 from which intermediate frequency pulses are derived and fed to supersonic delay cell 4. The delayed pulses are fed back to the mixer and after mixing with the local oscillations give rise to echo-simulating radio-frequency signals. A diode or crystal detector together with an I.F. tuned output circuit may be used in the mixer and it is stated a band-width of 2 Mc/s. is obtainable with a crystal operating at 10 Mc/s. The delay line may comprise a crystal 12 clamped to a steel cylinder 10 by an insulating short cylinder 13. End plate 11 reflects pulses applied to it while plate 14 is provided with serrations 15 to prevent reflection. The cell is filled with mercury or some other suitable propagating medium. If desired, end plate 14 can be attached obliquely to prevent reflection. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the delayed I.F. pulse is fed to a second mixer 7 supplied with local oscillations from the same source 3 and the radio-frequency signals radiated from a second antenna 8. Amplifiers may be introduced to amplify the I.F. pulses either before or after delay. A delay cell having separate crystals for transmission and reception and not relying on reflection may be used in the system of Fig. 3. The device may also be used as a part of a trainer for radiolocation operators or, if multiple reflections are not prevented, as a means of calibration of the equipment.
