Abstract
In the manufacture of a light-sensitive element an ingot of silicon is formed from silicon having a purity of at least 99 per cent. in the manner described in Specification 590,458, so that the ingot comprises columnar and non-columnar portions separated by a barrier layer. The body may be cut from the ingot so as to include parts of both portions and the barrier layer, and the columnar or non-columnar portion may be removed to expose the barrier layer. It is found that in some cases, when the ingot is cooled, the top of the melt becomes covered with a layer extruded from the interior of the ingot, the layer having a pale yellowish fluorescence, and the body may be cut so as to include this layer.
