Abstract
Silica hydrogel made under acid conditions is soaked in a metallic salt solution, drained, and treated with a volatile base in amount insufficient to react with all of the salt. The product is washed under acid conditions, dried to remove most of the water, and again washed and dried. The salt may be of aluminium, magnesium, zirconium, thorium, beryllium, or mixtures thereof. The base may be ammonium hydroxide, carbonate, sulphide &c. The products are useful as catalysts for the conversion of hydrocarbons.
