Abstract

Spray dried soaps and non-soapy synthetic detergents are subjected to the action of steam alone or to the action of steam in combination with a liquid such as water or a solution of a coating or modifying agent, while tumbling or otherwise agitating the material, in order to reduce fines and lumping tendency of the material in hot water and also to increase the apparent specific gravity of the material. The material may be agitated by means of a rotating drum, tumbler, vibrating conveyor belt &c. during the steaming operation, the temperature of the atmosphere being generally 120 DEG F. to 220 DEG F. The particles may be treated simultaneously or successively with steam and the liquid such as water or solution of a coating, plasticizing or modifying agent. Thus there may be used moist steam, or a mixture of steam with the vapours or atomized particles of plasticizers such as glycerine, glycol, mineral oil, and water-soluble sulphonated oils. The material is finally dried, agitation being preferably continued to reduce the total moisture content, preferably to that of the original material, warm dry air or inert gas being suitably used. The non-soapy synthetic detergents specified comprise the water-soluble salts of organic substituted, poly-basic, oxygen-containing inorganic acids including sulphates, sulphonates, borates, sulpho-borates, ortho-tetra-, pyro-, and polymetaphosphates, and phosphites. The initial spray-dried p detergents may also contain the usual builders, buffers &c. An actual non-soapy synthetic detergent exemplified comprises the Na salt of sulphuric acid ester of coconut oil fatty acid monoglycerides.
