Abstract

<PICT:0590616/IV/1> Isomonolefines with or without diolefines or polyolefines having up to 14 carbon atoms are continuously polymerized in presence of a liquid diluent below - 70 DEG C. in a system comprising a reaction chamber and a larger cooling chamber through which a turbulent stream of mixture is circulated, a portion being diverted to the reaction chamber in which it is agitated and a solution of Friedel-Crafts catalyst added and in which a slurry of polymer is produced. Part of the slurry is continuously recycled to the cooling chamber and part is withdrawn from the system. The rate of addition of catalyst and the flow of mixture through the reaction chamber are adjusted so that the smallest quantity of free catalyst is recycled to the cooling chamber and the maximum temperature rise in the reaction chamber is 10 DEG F. The preferred isomonolefine is isobutylene, specified polyolefines are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, dimethyl butadiene, myrcene and dimethylallene. Diluents specified include liquid methane, ethane and ethylene and alkyl halides. In the drawing a baffle 17 with a central opening 19 separates the reaction chamber 18 from the lower cooling chamber. Circulation in and between the two chambers is controlled by impellers driven by motors 16 and 29. A feed inlet is provided at 38 and manifold 30 supplies catalyst to the nozzles 31. The slurry of polymer is withdrawn through overflow pipe 33. In the cooling chamber an inlet 39 may be provided for supplying catalyst "poison" to minimize after-polymerization, and an additional outlet pipe 37 fitted. In a modification, a plurality of reaction chambers are provided in a loop of pipe separate from but connected to a heat exchanger section. Specifications 580,407, [Group III], and 590,595 are referred to.
