Abstract
590,498. Drying milk. GOLDEN STATE CO., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1944, No. 23967. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1943. [Class 49] In making dried milk powder, whole or skim milk is first converted by heating to powder having a moisture content above that required in the final product, and is then subjected, without substantial loss of heat, to a pressure belowthe vapour pressure of the moisture 'remaining in the powder in order to reduce the moisture content further and cool the powder. Whole milk, preliminarily de-aerated in the chamber 11 and concentrated in the evaporator 12 to 40-55 per cent. solids, heated in the heater 13 to 180‹-230‹F, and converted to powder of 3.5-5 per cent. moisture content in the spray drier 14 which is supplied through the conduit 16 with air at 175‹-185‹F ; this powder is separated from air in the centrifugal separator 19 and passed into the hopper 21 ; from the hopper the powder, at a temperature of 170‹-180‹F, is introduced into the chamber 24 which is then evacuated to a pressure of 0.25-0.10in. Hg, the powder being agitated by the stirrers 27 on the rotating rod 26; and a powder of 1.5-2 per cent. moisture content at a temperature of 110‹F. is subsequently discharged through the pipe 29.
