[Class 140] [Also in Groups IX and XXXVI] A woven fabric resistance element comprises in the weft a fine resistance wire and a warp of less than 50 denier that is not adversely affected when the fabric is impregnated or coated with a film-forming substance such as cellulose acetate applied as a solution in a volatile solvent of such viscosity that on evaporation of the solvent component the fabric is stiffened by bonding of the wire wefts to the warps and characterised by the presence of unfilled interstices extending over the surface. The film-forming substance may alternatively be applied in the form of cellulose acetate filaments wound round the wire end then coalesced after weaving by treating the fabric with a solvent for cellulose acetate such as acetone. A suitable warp consists of continuous filament cellulose acetate yarns stretched and saponified before weaving thus ensuring high tensile strength as well as lightness of weight. In use as a strain gauge the fabric is conveniently in the form of a narrow woven ribbon and may be affixed to a test surface by means of a nitrocellulose dope to which the cellulose acetate employed bonds readily.
