Abstract

589,759. Joint-making packing ; stuffing-boxes. B.B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., and STUART, T. March 31, 1945, No. 8150. [Classes 122 (iii) and 122 (v)] A method of making a material in string-like, tape-like or other extenuated form comprises forming a flexible semi-permeable sleeve around a plastic composition, and applying further plastic composition over the outer surface of the sleeve. The sleeved composition is passed through a die 1 having an aperture of slightly larger diameter which is surrounded with a supply of further plastic composition 16 (which may be the same or different). This is taken up by the sleeve as a superficial layer as it passes through the aperture. The die is heated to 100-200‹ C. and the composition in it to about 80‹ C. The coated product is passed through a second die (not shown) kept free of composition and having the same or slightly less diameter than that of the coated product. A suitable composition is that specified in Specification 572,676. [Group V]. Specification 572,683 also is referred to.
