Abstract

589,659. Frequency modulation. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Oct. 17, 1944, No. 20103. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] A potential-varied capacity is provided by a piezo-electric crystal such as Rochelle salt, sodium rubidium tartrate, sodium thallium tartrate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and the corresponding arsenates or mixtures thereof, maintained at its Curie point temperature and non-resonant with respect to the frequency of the circuit in which it is connected. Such a crystal exhibits hysteresis effects and a considerable change of dielectric constant with change of applied voltage, and may be used for frequency modulation, harmonic production, or automatic tuning. The crystal is preferably of heavy-water Rochelle salt which has a convenient Curie point temperature. The frequency generated by a velocitymodulation tube is modulated by such a crystal 3, Fig. 4, with electrodes 4, 5 connected in the inner conductor 7 of the line 23 coupling the buncher and catcher resonators 21, 22, the coupling loops 24 being connected to the resonators through small condensers 24a. The modulating potentials from source 25 are applied to the crystal electrodes 4, 5 through the low- or band-pass filter 27, 28, 29. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the crystal is connected across a coaxial line resonator associated with a triode oscillator to modulate its resonant frequency. As a harmonic producer, the crystal 3, 4, 5, Fig. 6, is connected across a sinusoidal wave source 50, 51, 52, the voltages produced by the crystal being applied to triode 53 in whose output circuit is a circuit 54, 55 tuned to the desired harmonic frequency. In a further application, the motor-driven tuning capacitor of a frequency modulation transmitter of the type described in Specification 546,677 is replaced by potential-varied crystal capacity. Specifications 362,377, 451,098, 531,841. and 535,507 also are referred to.
