Abstract
589,604. Revolving-barrel locks. POWER, R. F. July 18, 1944, No. 13731. [Class 44] In a revolving-barrel lock locked by axiallydisposed pin tumblers the key must be inserted, rotated to bring it into register with the tumblers, then given further inward axial movement to operate the tumblers, after which it may be rotated to rotate the barrel and operate a sliding lock bolt. The lock shown comprises a cylindrical casing 11 permanently closed at its outer end by plate 12 having a radial key-hole slot, the casing housing the three elements of the mechanism comprising a member 18 rotatable with the key 50, a bolt-operating member 19 also rotatable by the key, but normally locked to the third element 20 which houses the tumblers 24 and springs 23 and is fixed against movement by a screw 16. A shaft-like extension 31 of member 18 extends through members 19, 20 and forms a pivoted bearing for member 19, which is recessed to accommodate one end of a link 36 connected to member 19 by a pivot-pin 37 with screw-headed head 38 to which access may be had by screw-driver through an aperture 26 in member 20. The other end of the link is pivotally connected to the sliding bolt 39 by cross-pin 57. The bolt is slidably guided in a cylindrical guide 13 screwed into the side of casing 11, which also has a slot 15 for passage of the link. The link lies in an over dead-centre position when the bolt is shot. Member 20 houses two sets of angularly spaced tumblers (23, 24) indicated at 21, 22, Fig. 6, to lock the bolt in shot and retracted positions, both sets being out of register with the keyhole. The tumblers are shown as of cylindrical form, housed in individual bores disposed in radial straight lines, but they may be of non-circular cross-section, or disposed in staggered, curved, or other disposition, the key-bit being correspondingly shaped, or the tumblers may be disposed side-by-side in slots. Member 19 has a single set of tumbler apertures 30, Fig. 3, which may be brought into register with either of the sets 21, 22. A longitudinal groove 43 is provided to receive the outermost ward 42 of the key bit, Fig. 10. The other wards 51 operate the tumblers. The face of member 19 adjacent to member 18 has a slot wide enough to receive the key bit but narrow enough to prevent escape of the tumblers. Member 18 comprises two connected discs 47, 49, with key-receiving slot 45. Disc 49 covers the tumbler apertures 30 in member 19 except when slot 45 registers therewith. Disc 47 is of smaller diameter to clear an arcuate stop, not shown, on the inner face of plate 12 against which the disc bears. Disc 47 covers the keyhole in plate 12 when member 18 is rotated in either direction by the key, so that direct access to the tumblers is prevented. The key, Fig. 10, is inserted and rotated, together with member 18, until arrested by the stop with ward 42 in register with groove 43, is then pushed in further to operate the tumblers at 21, or 22, to free member 19, and is then rotated to shoot or withdraw the bolt, until arrested by a stop when in register with the other set of tumblers at 22 or 21 which again locks member 19 when the key is withdrawn.
