Abstract

An adhesive composition for securing abrasive grains to a flexible backing comprises a water-soluble colloidal adhesive, preferably of proteinaceous character in which is dispersed a minor amount of a water-insoluble organic material which is normally solid at room temperature and is preferably incompatible with the adhesive. The organic material is preferably less than 60 microns in size and may constitute 5-40 per cent. of the dry composition. The water-soluble adhesive may be glue, casein in alkaline aqueous solution, blood albumen, zein in solution in an aqueous alkaline or organic solvent, soya bean flour, dextrin, starch, or like amylaceous material, or compositions comprising synthetic or resinous materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, while the organic material may be wood rosin, hydrogenated, heat-treated, polymerized, or dehydrogenated rosin, hard asphalt, cellulose esters or ethers such as ethyl cellulose or cellulose nitrate or acetate, organic polysulphide resins, rubber, alkyd resins, alkyd resins modified with natural resin acids, hydrogenated polymers obtained from non-nitrogenous coal tar unsaturates, or other chemically-modified natural resins. In the preparation of the composition, the glue or its equivalent is dissolved in water to produce a 30-50 per cent. concentration and is heated to 150-180 DEG F., the resin is melted separately or is dissolved in a solvent such as xylene, ethyl or methyl alcohol, turpentine, or the like, and added while hot to the glue solution during agitation, and the resulting composition is used to retain the abrasive grains on a cloth backing.
