Abstract

588,817. Valve generating circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES. Ltd., and FREMLIN, J. H. Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19416. [Class 40 (v)] In an electron discharge generating device of the velocity modulation type in which a beam of electrons is directed from a cathode to excite a resonator, variation in the supply voltage is compensated by varying the beam. current so that the potential of the resonator relative to the cathode remains constant. The Figure shows the application to a coaxial line resonator 2 excited by a beam derived from a cathode 4, and fired through a control grid 3 and a slot defined by fins on to a collecting anode 1. According to the invention, a resistance R1 is interposed in the connection to the anode 1 and resonator 2, and the grid 3 is connected through a counteracting bias source 6 to adjustable tapping on a resistance R2 connected across the source 9, 10. In this way, a voltage dependent on the source is applied to the grid to so control the beam current that the potential of the resonator remains constant despite changes in the supply voltage in consequence of the counteracting voltages produced in the resistance R1. The conditions to ensure this are that mV - v + bE = m.n.I R1 where (V) is the voltage, (I) the beam current, (m.) the proportion of voltage applied to the control grid, (v) the counteracting voltage and b and n are constants determined by the geometrical design of the device, and E the potential of the resonating system. To avoid large dissipation of power in the resistance R1, this resistance may be replaced by the anode circuit impedance of a pentode valve, or other like differential impedance not requiring such a large total voltage. One or more gas discharge tubes 7 may be connected in parallel with the upper part of the resistance R2 so that the whole of the variation of V and not only the fraction m thereof appears across the lower part. In this way, the resistance R1 is lowered and the condition becomes mV - v+bE = n.I.R1. Specifications 537,490 and 587,619. are referred to.
