Abstract

587,967. Determining physical qualities of materials. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and BARTLEY, W. B. Dec. 12, 1944, No. 24939. [Class 37] A glass electrode for use in measuring the pH value of liquids is constructed in two or more parts so that the membrane is readily detachable. A glass tube 1 has sealed through its lower extremity a platinum wire 2 which is silver plated, the silver plating being subsequently covered by a film of silver chloride. The wire 2 is welded to a connection wire 3 which is sealed into the upper end of the tube 1. The glass membrane 4 consists of a bulb blown from special semi-conducting glass and formed into a neck 5, or this neck may be of ordinary glass joined to the special glass. The glass tube 1 and the membrane 4 are inserted into apertures in a rubber body 6 into a cavity 8 in which a solution of, for example, decinormal hydrochloric acid has previously been poured. The silver plated wire may be replaced by a small glass tube constituting a calomel half-cell and containing mercury, mercurous chloride, and potassium chloride absorbed in asbestos shredding. The body 6 may be large enough to carry other elements, such as the other electrode and a resistance thermometer. In a modification the lower end of the glass tube 1 and the inside of the neck 5 are ground so that they fit together to form a ground glass joint, over which a piece of tight rubber tubing is then fitted.
